What a nice perspective Tammi, thanks. Another common theme I see in both your children's idea of good parenting and the way you explain your own experience of having been parented is the existence of flexible boundaries and enough guidance to give you confidence without impinging on your abilities to make your own decisions. This is the balance I strive for. It seems that the great foundation your parents laid enables you to carry on some of their parenting style and create your own way on top of that. It reminds me what an advantage this is in life and that those of us who have not been so lucky should be gentle with ourselves if it has taken us a while longer to achieve that same balance with ease!

Thanks, Suzanne - where did John post the audio? It was all recorded, and Alla told me it will be up on the Daylesford Macedon Produce Harvest Festival website. I'll be sure to share when it is. It was a very spirited debate, complete with a highly entertaining tantrum from Cornish. ;-)

Steve, I am so with you, as you know. Perhaps we should ask them? Maybe one of the food journalists on the twitterz would like to interview them and ask exactly those questions?

Thanks for posting this Tammi. John Lethlean (@johnandnecia) posted some Audio of Necia and Michael's pieces.

I hope someone has thought of recording it all and maybe popping it up as a TedEX somewhere?

Would love to hear the spirit of the debate.

Nice one Tam-wish I could have listened to that debate live!
On the duopoly, I find it hard to reconcile the fact that some celebrity chefs who have spend their careers championing good products and food to then endorse a system that not only rips off producers but does relatively little to promote a culture of informed consuming. I'd like to know if the duopoly supplies the restaurants of said celebrity endorsees?
If its good enough to spruik to the rest of the populace surely its good enough to supply their businesses?

It's funny that the word solution keeps coming up. I also would like to minimise the impact on the world. However i do not do that by being a vegan and dislike the imputation that i am morally bankrupt. I probably work a lot harder for my food than any vegan, considering i feed and care fore three cows and a bunch of chooks/ducks/guinea fowl. Veganism is not the only way and if you want to perpetuate the war that anyone who eats meat is part of the problem, you will never, ever, win.

I watched the entire debate & I think two key points weren't adequately clarified at the outset: did animals off menu also refer to dairy & eggs (as it should). Second was the need to clarify if this was for global consideration or just Australia or wealthy western countries? I am a pragmatic vegan. In countries such as Australia we can eat vegan successfully, in some subsistence cultures this is prob not doable. However this should be considered carefully as recent history shows us that as nations develop the trend is to adopt adiet more based on animal produce. Higher consumption of animal products undoubtedly expands factory farming, environmental damage (climate, land & sea), generates more 'lifestyle' diseases & instills a disrespect for living beings. It could be argued (but I won't) that this in turn contributes to a ostrich approach to cruelty which may in fact have some psychological impact on human community. I agree with @richard concerning fish (although I'd day aquatic life as a whole) being ignored. There are massive issues with toxification of waterways (salt & fresh) due to fertilizer & chemical run off, salination & rubbish, yet this is even easier to ignore that farmed animals. I do find it it interesting that in your first post Richard, you mentioned giving up meat for (not only) ethical reasons but in response to Geoff you revert to the taste argument as why you'll eat it again. What ethical position do you have that allows you to stop & then start again, simply for taste? Oh & for the record I am a vegan of 12 months & I don't take or need supplements. Like any diet there are balanced versions of anything. I do not find it difficult. What I do struggle with is the ignorance & selfishness of others who choose to stay ignorant or worse seek to attack those of us who are trying to be a solution.

A well written & admirable piece, Tammi. And good on you for entering the competition. I haven't read the finalists' pieces yet, nor the winning article - hopefully i'll get to them over the weekend.
While i couldn't have put it nearly as eloquently as you, i agree with your point that we are part of an ecosystem that is out of balance, unfortunately to the detriment of the animals that most of us in the West consume.
Will that system be rebalanced if we all tweak our habits - eat less meat, practice polyculture, grow less corn & soy? Certainly. Will most of us tweak those habits? Certainly not. At least, not any time soon.
I think it is ethical to eat meat in the ecosystem you describe.
So thank you for your argument, for suggesting ways to rebalance our stuffed up ecosystem, and for reminding us that we're all links in a food chain that we have a responsibility to maintain.

I just want to add, if you think I've gone a bit off topic, by all means rein me in. I tend to be long-winded and lose track sometimes. Looking forward to further discussion on any of the topics raised.
